About this work
A gigantic wolf's head, jaws open and teeth bared, fills most of the upper composition, one eye burning orange and the other a cold white disc. Below, dwarfed by the apparition, two men stand on dark ground; one kneels by a small fire, the other holds aloft a flaming torch, sparks scattering into the night sky.
Rendered mostly in black and grey with a patch of rust orange behind the wolf's head, the scene relies on stark tonal contrast and smudged texture rather than line. The pale glow of torch, fire, and eye punctuates the darkness, while the wolf's impossible scale over the men creates a brooding, menacing mood of danger in the wild.
